چکیده

as the infimum of Θ(f) def = maxP∈M |φ(P )− ψ(f(P ))|, as f varies in the set of all homeomorphisms from M ontoN . The problem of finding the possible values for d naturally arises. In this paper we prove that under appropriate hypotheses the natural pseudo-distance equals either |c1−c2| or 12 |c1−c2|, where c1 and c2 are two suitable critical values of the measuring functions. This equality shows that the relations between the natural pseudo-distance and the critical values of the measuring functions previously obtained in higher dimensions can be made stronger in the particular case of closed curves. Moreover, the examples we give in this paper show that our result cannot be further improved, and therefore it completely solves the problem of determining the possible values for d in the 1-dimensional case.

J. Hempel in [6] showed that the set of distances of the Heegaard splittings (S,V , hn(V)) is unbounded, as long as the stable and unstable laminations of h avoid the closure of V ⊂ PML(S). Here h is a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of a surface S while V is the set of isotopy classes of simple closed curves in S bounding essential disks in a fixed handlebody. With the same hypothesis we show that...

Geometric inflexibility and 3-manifolds that fiber over the circle

We prove hyperbolic 3-manifolds are geometrically inflexible: a unit quasiconformal deformation of a Kleinian group extends to an equivariant bi-Lipschitz diffeomorphism between quotients whose pointwise biLipschitz constant decays exponentially in the distance form the boundary of the convex core for points in the thick part. Estimates at points in the thin part are controlled by similar estim...

A Convergence Theorem for Riemannian Submanifolds

In this paper we study the convergence of Riemannian submanifolds. In particular, we prove that any sequence of closed submanifolds with bounded normal curvature and volume in a closed Riemannian manifold subconverge to a closed submanifold in the C1 ,Q topology. We also obtain some applications to irreducible homogeneous manifolds and pseudo-holomorphic curves in symplectic manifolds.

On Hölder Projective Divergences

We describe a framework to build distances by measuring the tightness of inequalities, and introduce the notion of proper statistical divergences and improper pseudo-divergences. We then consider the Hölder ordinary and reverse inequalities, and present two novel classes of Hölder divergences and pseudo-divergences that both encapsulate the special case of the Cauchy-Schwarz divergence. We repo...
